What premium milk actually means

What premium milk actually means

Premium is an easy word to print on a carton and a hard one to prove. So here is exactly what we mean by it, and how you can check every part of it yourself.

Start with what is in the milk. Ours is whole milk with at least 4.5% fat and 8.5% SNF, as printed on the pack. Toned milk, the kind most households buy, sits at about 3.0% fat. That gap is not an accident. Toned milk is standardised, which means the fat is adjusted to hit a target number before packing. We do not standardise. What the cows gave that morning is what goes into the pack.

That is why it tastes fuller, and it is also why it costs more. There is simply more milk in every litre of it.

Then there is where it comes from. Our milk comes from four named farms in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, and each farm has an owner we can name. Between them the herd is 155 cows, giving about 1,197 litres a day. Those are small numbers and we are not going to dress them up. It is what we can actually stand behind today.

Because the supply is that small, every batch stays tied to the farm it came from instead of being tipped into a pool. Ask where a pack came from and there is a real answer, not a stock photo of a green field.

Now the part most brands skip, which is what premium does not mean. It does not mean the milk treats anything. Lactose is the milk sugar, and whole milk carries it exactly as toned milk does. If dairy genuinely does not agree with you, richer milk will not fix that, and we are not going to suggest otherwise.

So when a carton says premium, ask three questions. What is the fat percentage. Is the milk standardised. Which farm did it come from. A brand that will not answer all three is asking you to take its word for it, and you should not have to.

Common questions

Is premium milk good for lactose intolerance?

No. Lactose is the milk sugar, and whole milk carries it just like toned milk does. Richer milk is not a treatment for anything. If dairy genuinely does not agree with you, no cow milk is a cure.

What is the difference between whole milk and toned milk?

Toned milk is standardised down to about 3.0% fat before it is packed. Ours is whole milk with at least 4.5% fat and 8.5% SNF, as printed on the pack, so nothing is taken out and nothing is added back. That is the main reason it tastes fuller and costs more.

Is premium milk just marketing?

It is whenever nobody will tell you what it means. Ask for the fat percentage, ask whether the milk is standardised, and ask which farm it came from. A brand that can answer all three is using the word for something real.
